Rosalia Vila Tobella[2] (born 25 September 1992),[3] known mononymously as Rosalia (Spanish: [rosa'li.a], Catalan: [ruz@'li.@]),[4][5][6] is a Spanish singer. [7][8] She was raised in Barcelona and has been dubbed an "atypical pop star" because of her diverse musical styles. In the age of 13, she fell an obsession with Spanish folk music. She then studied musicology at the Catalonia College of Music. She also performed at weddings and music bars. It reimagined flamenco, mixing it with pop and hip-hop. The two singles "Malamente", and "Pienso en tu Mira" were a hit among the Spanish public , and were met with the acclaim of all critics. El Mal Querer was the first artist to bring Rosalia onto the world stage of music. [12][13(13) Rosalia was a pioneer of urbano music through her 2019 releases "Con Altura" and "Yo Ti x Tu x Mi", achieving global success. Her third studio album Motomami (2022) provided reggaeton with a new experimental sound, moving away from the flamenco-inspired style. The album garnered the attention of the world with its two singles "La Fama" and "Saoko" and was the best reviewed album of the year on Metacritic. Through her career, Rosalia has accumulated ten top singles in her native country, the most for a local artist. Two Grammy Awards, eleven Latin Grammy Awards (including 2 Album of the Year nominations) as well as four MTV Video Music Awards and three UK Music Video Awards have been conferred to Rosalia. Also, she was awarded two Premio Ruido Awards. Billboard gave her the Rising Star Award in 2019 for "changing the current music landscape with her flamenco-inspired pop"[18[18]. She was also the first Spanish-singing artist to be nominated by the Grammys for Best New Artist. Rosalia was born on 25 September 1992 in Sant Cugat del Valles and raised in Sant Esteve Sesrovires,[20][21][22] Baix Llobregat, Catalonia. She is the eldest of four children of Pilar Tobella, an entrepreneur who runs a small metalworking business. Jose Manuel Vila was her father. He was born in Cudillero (Asturias). They separated in 2019. Her older sister Pilar Vila who was born in 1989, is her stylist. Rosalia discovered her love for the performing arts at a young age, especially after discovering the discography of Camaron de la Isla. She began her musical studies in Taller de Musics. She completed a six-year program at the academy. She took classes at the Raval School, then transferred to the Superior School of Music of Catalonia. [25] She was also the sole singer in her group, singing at weddings and bars that were musical. The compensation for this was "a little more than 80 euros" or in return for dinner. Rosalia was in a position to meet a variety of underground Spanish musicians during this time period such as La Zowi and Yung Beef, Kaydy Case, Hinds Maria Escarmiento, Kaydy Cain.
